PET preform design for carbonated drinks demands a fundamentally different approach than standard packaging applications. The internal pressure of carbonated beverages — typically ranging from 3.7 to 6.2 bar (54–90 psi) at 20°C — subjects every preform to mechanical stress that an improperly engineered design simply cannot withstand. AA is a byproduct of PET degradation during processing. While it primarily affects taste in water bottles, CSD preforms should target AA levels below 1 ppm to avoid off-flavors in cola and lemon-lime beverages, which are particularly sensitive to aldehyde contamination. Wall thickness in a CSD preform must be intentionally non-uniform. The goal is to engineer the correct material distribution after blow molding, not just at the preform stage.
